If you're looking to get ahead in your job, then our essential Skills for Work course is for you.
This Free course will help you to improve your Maths and English skills. It will also give you the chance to learn and practice valuable new skills for dealing with different work based situations.
The course has been developed with the TUC and has been divided into the following work sectors to help you choose what is the most relevant for you:
- Retail
- Manufacturing
- Care
- Cleaning and Support
- Construction
- Road Haulage
For example, within the Road Haulage section, you can improve your understanding of Health and Safety information by learning the meaning of signs and symbols. Or brush up on your Maths skills for calculating journey times, load weights and fuel consumption.
What it can help you achieve?
This course will give you the confidence and the improved skills you need to deal with many different work situations, including:
- Taking part in meetings
- Dealing with difficult customers
- Writing reports
- Reading and understanding
- Health and Safety information
- Using graphs, tables and charts
- Form filing and recording information
- Estimating measurements

What can you do after the course?
Once you've learnt something new, you may want a qualification to show what you've achieved.
The qualifications you could get are:
- Certificate in Adult Literacy - Level 1 or Level 2
- Certificate in Adult Numeracy - Level 1 or Level 2
Q. Will I be able to use these skills to get on at work?
A. These courses can help you work towards a qualification, which may improve your job prospects.
How do I get a Certificate in Adult Numeracy or Literacy?
You have to take and pass a short test for each of the certificates. They are:
- Free
- Multiple choice
- Just 40 questions long
- Available on a computer, so you can answer the questions with the touch of a button
The tests only take between 60 and 75 minutes to complete and many people choose to take a test on a computer - computer based tests are interactive and colourful.

This course looks at subjects like:

It's a four stage course designed to give you the edge when applying for a job.
Essential Skills for Retail
If you already work in passenger services, railway operations, track maintenance or engineering and want to brush up on your English or maths skills, this is the course for you. You will learn about health and safety, working with others, following written instructions and filling out forms correctly. This course lets you practice and improve the particular maths and English skills you need to get the most from your job.
Essential Skills for Health and Care
Are you a carer in a day centre, hospital or home for the elderly?
Do you have caring responsibilities or are you thinking of working in care?
If so, Essential Skills for Health and Care can help you improve the maths and English skills you will need. It takes you through the sort of situations you're likely to come across and lets you practice the skills as you go.
Skillsbuild for Health and Care
This course is just for health and care workers. You will practice maths and English skills you will need everyday. When you complete this course you will be able to:
- Understand units of measurement and money
- Interpret data
- Understand body language and different types of behavior
- Read, write and communicate with others effectively
Working in Care - Next Steps
This nextsteps course is designed for those already working in the care sector and can help you develop a better understanding of the social issues involved in working within care.
You will explore new topics, such as equality, discrimination and stereotyping.
Skills City
Skills City is a range of three courses - Retail, Distribution and Manufacturing. These courses are designed to help you improve important everyday skills you'll need in the workplace such as:
- The correct use of spelling and grammar
- How to listen to and follow instructions
- How to read and select specific information
